I have several Fujifilm RAF raw files and want to either preview them or convert them to JPEG. I'm mainly using Ubuntu Linux, but Windows options would also be helpful. What software can open RAF files reliably, and which tools are good for converting them to JPEG?

RAW Therapee and darktable are very capable programs for developing RAWs. Both of them can handle recent RAF files and are native in Linux.
XnView MP is a decent viewer for viewing them under Linux.
FujiFilm RAW file converter works using Wine with some GUI problems.

On Linux, good options for Fujifilm RAF files are RawTherapee and darktable. Both are native Linux applications and can open and develop RAF raw files, including conversion to JPEG.
If you mainly want to browse/view the files, XnView MP is a useful Linux viewer that can handle RAF files.
For command-line conversion, ImageMagick can read Fujifilm RAF files and convert them to formats like JPEG, though it cannot write RAF files.
If you want Fujifilm’s own software, Fujifilm RAW File Converter may run under Wine on Linux, but expect some GUI issues.
So in short:
- Best all-around raw editors/converters: RawTherapee, darktable
- Good viewer: XnView MP
- Command-line conversion: ImageMagick
- Fuji’s converter on Linux: possible via Wine, but less smooth
