Canon R6 top dial skips inputs — repair or try cleaning?

My 3-year-old Canon R6 has developed an issue with the top main dial: some clicks register and others do not, with no obvious pattern. I previously tried contact cleaner, which helped temporarily, but the problem keeps returning and seems to be getting worse.
I’m hesitant to disassemble the camera myself. Canon will inspect it for a fee before giving a repair estimate, so I’m trying to decide whether service is worthwhile for a problem that is annoying but doesn’t make the camera unusable.
Is this likely to be a dirty or failing encoder/dial mechanism, and is there anything safe to try before sending it in?

Depends a lot on the technology used.
IMHO is you can spray cleaner fluid on the contacts of the encoder in a theoretically weather-sealed body then the bad contacts may be the least of your problems.
My hypothesis is that it is an optical one which is being clogged by dust/debris, and adding contact cleaner to the mix may just create clumps of dirt that make the matter worse. Blowing air could dislodge the debris and restore proper function.

This sounds like a problem with the dial’s encoder rather than a setting issue. One plausible cause is dust/debris interfering with the encoder, especially if the dial sometimes works and sometimes skips.
Based on the advice given, more contact cleaner is not a great idea. If the encoder is optical rather than a simple exposed electrical contact, cleaner may not help and could mix with dirt, making the problem worse. On a weather-sealed body, spraying fluids into the control area also risks introducing contamination where it shouldn’t be.
The safest thing to try is gentle air cleaning around the dial to see if debris can be dislodged. If that doesn’t improve it, professional service is the sensible next step. Since no one provided actual Canon repair pricing, there’s no reliable way to estimate the cost from the information here.
In short: stop using contact cleaner, try careful air cleaning, and if the skipping continues, send it to Canon or a qualified repair shop.
