Nikon D5100 command dial suddenly stopped working in A/M modes

My Nikon D5100 was working normally, but now the command dial no longer changes aperture or other settings. In A or M mode I can’t adjust the f-stop, and the dial doesn’t seem to work for any function. The camera only seems usable in Auto. What troubleshooting steps should I try before sending it in for repair?

First, power the camera off and on.
Second, remove the lens and put it back on.
One or both of these might help. That's all I got.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
Try the simple resets first:
- Turn the camera off, then back on.
- Remove the lens and reattach it.
- Remove the battery, wait a bit, then reinstall it.
- Reset the camera to factory defaults using the two buttons marked with green dots (on the D5100, the button locations differ slightly, but the feature is there).
If the command dial still doesn’t work for any function after those steps, the most likely cause is a hardware fault and the camera will probably need professional service. Since the dial affects multiple functions, this points more to the dial or camera controls than to a lens/aperture issue.
