Why is ISO grayed out in Auto mode on a Nikon D5100?

On my Nikon D5100, the ISO setting is unavailable when the mode dial is set to Auto. It stays on Auto ISO, and I can only change ISO in P, S, A, or M modes. Is there any way to manually control ISO while still using Auto mode?

There is no way to change the cameras ISO when you are on the preset Auto mode. This is typical of all cameras. This is because by being in Auto you are telling the camera that you want it to control all the settings. Hence the greyed out ISO control.
You can try changing the camera mode to P (Program) which is still an auto mode; but it gives you slightly more control over your settings. E.g. Changing your ISO.

No. On the Nikon D5100, the full Auto scene mode is designed to control exposure settings for you, including ISO, so manual ISO selection is disabled and appears grayed out. That behavior is normal.
If you want the camera to handle most settings but still let you choose ISO yourself, switch to P mode. Program mode still automates exposure, but gives you access to more settings than the green Auto mode, including ISO control. You can also use S, A, or M if you want even more manual control.
