Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III says SD card is locked when it isn’t

My Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III shows a message that the SD card is write-protected/locked even though the card’s lock slider is not set to lock. I’ve also tried new SD cards and get the same result. What could cause this?

The "lock" (small grey rectangle on the left side) is a mechanical slider which can be in two positions. It's not connected electrically to anything inside SD card itself. Rather it's the device which accepts the SD card who must detect the position of this switch and disable writing to the card if it's in locked position. Usually this detection is implemented by some metal spring inside the device.
If you did indeed set the cards you inserted to the upper position then it's most logical to suggest that there is slight damage inside your G7X's card slot. It can be easily fixed by somebody skilled without any specialized parts but I'm afraid you cannot do it yourself that easily.

If multiple SD cards show the same “card locked” message, the most likely issue is the camera’s card-slot lock sensor, not the cards themselves.
On a full-size SD card, the lock tab is only a mechanical slider. The card itself doesn’t electronically enforce write protection. Instead, the camera detects the slider position with a small internal switch or spring contact in the card slot. If that part is bent, stuck, or damaged, the camera can falsely think every card is locked.
Since you’ve already tried other cards, that points to a problem inside the G7 X Mark III rather than with the SD cards. This usually needs inspection or repair by a qualified technician/service center, because the issue is in the card slot mechanism.
