Can the Canon EOS 450D/Rebel XSi shoot RAW in full Auto mode?

I’d like to hand my Canon EOS 450D/Rebel XSi to less experienced users and let them shoot in full Auto (green box) mode. Is there any way to have the camera record RAW files in that mode? On this camera, the RAW/JPEG setting for the creative modes appears separate from the settings available in the automatic scene modes, which seem to offer only JPEG sizes. If not, is Program (P) mode the closest workaround?

Not that I know of, I tend to use Program (P) for that exact reason. As far as choosing to use flash, I actually prefer that situation, since in most situations, on board flash isn't all that helpful, and in some it actually causes problems.

No. On the Canon EOS 450D/Rebel XSi, full Auto (green box) mode does not allow RAW capture; it records JPEG only. In that mode the camera takes full control, including image-format limitations.

The usual workaround is Program (P) mode, which keeps exposure largely automatic but gives you more flexibility than full Auto. It’s the closest option if you want to hand the camera to someone inexperienced while still being able to shoot RAW.

One practical difference is flash behavior: in P mode, the user may need to raise the built-in flash manually, while full Auto can decide that automatically. That said, built-in flash often isn’t ideal anyway, so this may be a benefit rather than a drawback.
