Can older manual-focus Tamron Adaptall lenses be used on a Nikon D5100?

I have several older Tamron manual-focus lenses from the film era (roughly 1985–1999), including zooms like 70–200mm and 18–70mm. They were used on film SLR cameras, and I believe they may use the Tamron Adaptall system rather than a fixed Nikon mount.
Can these lenses be mounted on a Nikon D5100? If so, what adapter or mount do I need, and will autofocus or exposure metering work? I'm mainly trying to understand what level of compatibility to expect before using them on my DSLR.

The Nikon mount is universal, so if you have an adapter for Nikon, it will mount on the D5100. It is likely that your camera won't meter with them however. So not only will you manually focus, but you will probably have to shoot in Manual exposure mode.
If you look about halfway down this page you will find what Nikon lens types your D5100 is compatible with. You may be able to determine what the Adaptall mount is similar to - probably AI

Yes—if the lenses have a Nikon-compatible Adaptall mount fitted, they should mount on a Nikon D5100. The D5100 uses the Nikon F mount, so the key requirement is the correct Nikon Adaptall/Adaptall-2 adapter on each lens.
However, expect limited functionality:
- focus will be manual only
- exposure metering may not work on the D5100 with these older manual lenses
- you may need to shoot in Manual exposure mode and set exposure by test shots/histogram
So the answer is: mechanical compatibility is possible, but modern camera automation is limited.
What you need:
- Confirm each lens is actually a Tamron Adaptall/Adaptall-2 lens.
- Make sure each one has a Nikon F-mount Adaptall adapter attached.
- Be prepared to use manual focus and likely manual exposure.
If a lens already has the Nikon adapter, it should physically fit the D5100. If it has a different camera mount attached, you would need the Nikon version of the Adaptall mount instead.
