Can thrifted Vivitar and Tamron Adaptall-2 lenses work on a Canon EOS 4000D, and what adapters are needed?

I have a Canon EOS 4000D and two thrifted lenses: a Vivitar 100-300mm Macro Focusing Zoom and a Tamron Adaptall-2 lens currently fitted with an Olympus mount. Can either of these be used on my camera, and if so, what adapter would I need? I’d also like to know whether autofocus and aperture control would still work, or if they would need to be used manually.

Yes, possibly — but it depends on the actual mount of each lens.

Your Canon EOS 4000D uses the Canon EF mount (and also accepts EF-S lenses). Older third-party lenses like Vivitar were made in many different mounts, so the Vivitar lens must be identified by its mount before anyone can say which adapter is needed.

For the Tamron Adaptall-2 lens: the lens itself is designed to take interchangeable Adaptall-2 mount adapters. If it currently has an Olympus adapter attached, you would remove that and fit a Tamron Adaptall-2-to-Canon EF adapter instead.

In general, adapted vintage lenses on a Canon DSLR are usually manual-focus, and often manual-aperture as well. Autofocus and electronic lens communication typically do not work unless the lens was originally made for Canon EF.

Also note that some lens mounts adapt easily to Canon EF, while others may require an optical adapter or may not focus to infinity. So the key first step is to identify the exact mount on the Vivitar lens and confirm that the Tamron is truly Adaptall-2.
