Which Nikon film bodies can use a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 Di II VC for F-mount?

I have a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC Nikon F-mount lens and was considering buying a Nikon film camera to use with it. I'm confused by Nikon F-mount compatibility, especially with newer G-type/AF-S-style lenses on older film bodies.
For example, would a manual-focus body like the Nikon FM3A allow any usable operation, or would I lose aperture control and autofocus? Which Nikon film bodies, if any, can use this lens properly?

As the SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC LD is a Di II it has reduced image circle coverage and it will most likely display severe vignetting on 35mm film or a digital camera with a 35mm sized sensor such as the D700 or D3 series.

The main issue is not just controls—it’s coverage. Your Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 Di II is an APS-C/DX-only lens, so its image circle is too small for 35mm film. On a Nikon film SLR, it will likely show heavy vignetting or fail to cover the frame, especially at the wide end.
As for operation: on older manual-focus bodies like the FM3A, a G-type/modern AF lens like this is not really usable in a practical way. You would not have normal aperture control, and autofocus would not work.
On later autofocus film bodies that support AF-S-style lenses and electronic features—such as the Nikon F100—the lens should work mechanically/electronically much better, including metering and autofocus. But even then, the DX/Di II image circle problem remains, so it’s still not a good match for 35mm film.
So the short answer is: while some newer Nikon film bodies may operate the lens, this particular lens is not suitable for 35mm film because it does not cover the full frame.
