Can a Nikon D40 produce images like these without post-processing?

I’ve seen several striking example photos credited to the Nikon D40 and I’m wondering whether results like these could be achieved straight out of the camera, or whether they almost certainly involve editing. I’m not asking because editing is bad—I just want to understand how much is camera capability versus lighting, technique, and post-processing. Can an entry-level DSLR like the D40 produce this kind of image quality on its own, and what kinds of effects would still typically require retouching or compositing?

These are definitely edited. The first one you note looks like it's had heavy retouching done on the model's skin, and the third one is definitely a composite of two images.
That said, the fact they're edited has nothing to do with the camera... for these style of images they'd be edited and post-processed even if you had a $8000 camera body.

Some of those images were almost certainly edited. Based on the answers, at least one appears to have clear skin retouching, and another looks like a composite. So no, not all of those examples are likely straight out of camera.
But that does not mean the Nikon D40 is incapable of excellent results. The camera body itself is not the main limitation here. With good light, exposure, lens choice, and technique, an entry-level DSLR like the D40 can produce very strong images, especially for web-size viewing. Higher-end cameras mainly add usability and professional features like better viewfinders, weather sealing, and faster operation—not magic image quality.
One answer also notes that at least one of the linked portraits could plausibly have been done mostly in-camera with a D40 using simple off-camera flash and careful lighting.
So the practical takeaway is:
- yes, a D40 can create impressive images
- no, the examples shown are not all likely unedited
- lighting and skill matter far more than camera class
- retouching and compositing are separate from the camera used
