I have a Nikon D3300 and only one battery, so I want to buy a spare. Is the older EN-EL14 battery compatible with the D3300, or do I need the EN-EL14a specifically?

Yes. According to the camera’s compatibility information/manual, the Nikon D3300 can use the EN-EL14 battery as well as the EN-EL14a. If you’re buying a spare, just make sure it’s listed as compatible with the D3300 and use a reputable battery/charger source.
