I need a replacement battery for my Nikon D3300. The camera specifies an EN-EL14a battery. Can I also use an EN-EL14, and if so, is there any difference in performance or battery life?

You can use either the EL14 or the EL14A. Be advised that the EL14A has slightly more capacity. In other words more shots per charge.

Yes. A Nikon D3300 can use either an EN-EL14 or an EN-EL14a battery. The main difference is capacity: the EN-EL14a has slightly higher capacity, so it will generally give you more shots per charge. If you use an EN-EL14, it should still work, but you may get somewhat shorter battery life.
