Can the Panasonic Lumix TZ10 use third-party spare batteries?

I'm looking for a spare battery for a Panasonic Lumix TZ10. Panasonic's official DMW-BCG10E battery is described as "ID Secured," which suggests some third-party batteries may not be recognized by the camera. I used a cheap battery successfully in an older TZ5, but I'm not sure whether the TZ10 will accept non-Panasonic batteries. Do I have to buy the official Panasonic battery, or are compatible third-party options available?

I emailed Bristol Cameras asking the same question since they sell a non-brand battery:

Your question was: I thought that Panasonic "secured" their cameras so that only panasonic batteries work. For example, the TZ7 would only recognise it if the firmware was downgraded to pre-v1.2. Can you confirm that this battery actually works in the new TZ10 please?

Answer is: Hi, yes these Hahnel batteries are chipped so they will work with the Panasonic TZ10. When ordering pop in the comments box that it needs to be compatible with the TZ10 and we can then make sure we supply one of the latest ones which is marked on the packaging as compatible with the TZ10 camera.

When I get the camera, I'll pop in there and try one out and let you all know what happens...

You do not necessarily have to use the official Panasonic battery, but with the TZ10 you should be careful. Community reports suggest that some third-party batteries do work, especially ones that are specifically described as chipped or compatible with the TZ10, while others may not be recognized at all.

So the safest takeaway is:

  • Official Panasonic batteries should work reliably.
  • Third-party batteries can work, but compatibility is inconsistent.
  • Buy only from a reputable seller that explicitly states TZ10 compatibility.
  • If possible, confirm the battery is a newer chipped/decoded version before buying.

In short: the Panasonic battery is not the only type that can work, but cheaper alternatives are hit-and-miss, so proceed with caution.
