Can a Lightroom Smart Collection filter photos from another collection by rating?

In Lightroom 4, I already have a collection set up and want to create a Smart Collection that shows only the photos from that collection with a 4-star rating. I tried adding rules like:
- Collection contains "CollectionA"
- Rating is 4 stars
but it doesn’t seem to work consistently. Can Smart Collections reference another collection this way, and are there any limitations if the source collection is itself a Smart Collection?

You can't have a smart collection that references another smart collection and I suspect that this is to prevent a kind of infinite loop in the rules and causing performance/stability issues.
So smart collections only search for normal collections when matching your rules.

Yes—Lightroom Smart Collections can filter by a regular collection name and combine that with other rules such as rating. Set the Smart Collection to match all rules, then add:
- Collection contains (or starts with) your collection name
- Rating is 4 stars
If that doesn’t work, first test with only the Collection rule to confirm Lightroom is finding the correct collection, then add the rating rule.
The key limitation is that a Smart Collection cannot reference another Smart Collection. It can only match normal collections. If your source collection is itself a Smart Collection, create a new Smart Collection that repeats the original rules and adds the extra rating filter instead.
