I’m considering the Kenko Pro 300 DGX 2x teleconverter for Canon and want to know if it will work with the Canon EF-S 55-250mm lens. If it can be mounted, how usable is it in practice in terms of autofocus, brightness, and image quality?

It is a 2x teleconverter. For all practical purposes, 2x teleconverters are not very useful on slow zoom lenses because it simply costs too much light - two full stops.

The Canon 55-200 f/4-5.6 with a 2x teleconverter will become a 110-400 f/8-11. Keeping the shutter speeds reasonable on such a long and slow lens will not be easy. Autofocus will struggle, and it will not be easy to see in the viewfinder what you are doing.

So, in conclusion: Even if it may work in a purely technical sense you probably won't want to do it.

Generally, this is not a good match. Community feedback indicates the Kenko Pro 300 DGX teleconverters are not intended for Canon EF-S lenses such as the EF-S 55-250mm, so compatibility is effectively a no-go.

Even if a 2x teleconverter could be mounted in some technical sense, it would be impractical on a slow zoom like the 55-250mm. A 2x converter costs 2 stops of light, turning an f/4-5.6 lens into roughly an f/8-11 lens. That makes autofocus unreliable, darkens the viewfinder, and makes it harder to maintain fast enough shutter speeds at the longer effective focal lengths.

So the short answer is: no, you should not plan on using this teleconverter with the Canon EF-S 55-250mm.
