I’m using a Canon EOS 6D Mark II with a Kenko 1.4x Teleplus teleconverter (DGX/HD/Pro 300). The camera shows Error 01 when the teleconverter is attached, even after cleaning the contacts and trying a newer unit. Another similar setup appears to work on a friend’s camera. Is there a known compatibility issue or setting that can cause this, and is there a workaround?

A likely cause is Autofocus Microadjustment (AFMA) being enabled on the 6D Mark II. Some Kenko teleconverters are known to trigger Error 01 or even lock up certain Canon bodies when AFMA is turned on, even if the adjustment value is set to 0 and even if the lens is in manual focus.
Try this:
- Go into the camera menu.
- Find AF Microadjustment / AFMA.
- Set it to Disable.
- Reattach the teleconverter and test again.
If the camera has already locked up with Error 01, power it off and remove/reinsert the battery before retrying.

Try turning off Autofocus Microadjustment (AFMA) (see page 200 of the EOS 6D MkII Instruction Manual, or 5D MkII manual).
If AFMA is enabled, even if the adjustment for the particular lens/TC combo mounted is "0", some Kenko TCs will lock up the camera. This still occurs even if the lens is set to 'Manual Focus'. It's been fairly well discussed in certain forums.
I've got an older Kenko C-AF 2X Teleplus Pro 300 DGX bought in 2011 and all of my cameras from about 2012 on have this issue. With AFMA set to 'Enable' if the shutter button is fully pressed the camera throws an 'Error 01' and locks up the camera. It must then be turned off with the battery removed to reset the camera. With AFMA set to 'Disable' there is no 'Error 01' when using the teleconverter.
