Are there drawbacks to using a microSD card in an SD adapter for a camera?

I’d like to use a microSD card with an SD adapter in my camera so I can move the card straight into a tablet that accepts microSD. Are there any disadvantages or reliability issues compared with using a regular full-size SD card?

The main disadvantages are:

  • Slower speeds available in the microSD format as compared to full size SD
  • Additional cost of the microSD format
  • The addition of another piece that can fail, be lost, etc.
  • The microSD cards are so small that some people are afraid of losing them or breaking them easily

In today's market, the first two points are typically less of an issue than in the past. If you have a compelling reason to use microSD, then I would say go for it.

Yes—there can be a few tradeoffs, though they may be minor depending on your needs.

Possible disadvantages:

  • microSD has historically offered slower options than full-size SD, though this is less of an issue with current cards.
  • microSD cards can cost more.
  • The adapter adds another part that can fail, be lost, or fit inconsistently.
  • Very cheap adapters may have poor mechanical or electrical tolerances, so a card may work in one device but not another.
  • microSD cards are tiny, so they’re easier to misplace or handle awkwardly.

If the convenience of moving the card directly to your tablet matters, using microSD with an adapter is a reasonable approach. Just use a good-quality, reputable adapter rather than the cheapest no-name option, and make sure the card’s speed is sufficient for your camera’s shooting and video needs.
