Does a microSD-to-SD adapter brand matter for camera use?

I’m considering using microSD cards in an SD-size adapter for a trip because microSD cards are much cheaper where I live. If I buy a reputable microSD card and use a generic microSD-to-SD adapter in my camera, is there any real downside compared with using a branded adapter? Could the adapter affect speed, reliability, or cause photo corruption? I’ll be using the card in a Samsung NX300.

A micro SD to SD card adapter is a passive device, i.e. it does nothing but provide a set of contact points bridging those on the micro SD card and those on the SD slot. That being the case, it should pretty much either work or not work, but won't impact performance... unless you find one of such low quality that the contacts fail to accomplish their simple task.

As for disadvantages of the micro SD format itself, see this question.

Usually, no. A microSD-to-SD adapter is normally a passive device: it mainly just routes the electrical contacts from the microSD card to the SD-sized contacts. Because of that, the adapter brand generally should not affect image quality or card performance.

In practice, the main risk is build quality. A poor adapter can have bad or inconsistent contacts, which may cause the card to fail to read properly or behave oddly. One reported issue is that some card/adapter combinations can be finicky, such as showing up as read-only.

So the safest advice is:

  • use a reputable microSD card,
  • use an adapter that fits well and has solid contacts,
  • test the exact card/adapter combination in your camera before relying on it for a trip.

If it works reliably in testing, it should generally be fine. The adapter itself is unlikely to corrupt photos unless it has faulty contact or mechanical issues.
