Are RRS lever clamps compatible with all Arca-Swiss plates, or is a screw clamp safer?

I’m upgrading to a full-size ball head and am considering a Really Right Stuff BH-55 for use on my Manfrotto 055XB legs. I also want to add a nodal slide for panoramic stitching.

My main question is about Arca-Swiss clamp compatibility. I’m choosing between an RRS lever-release clamp and a screw-knob clamp. I’ve read that lever clamps work best when you use one brand of Arca-style plates, while screw clamps are more forgiving across different manufacturers.

If I may mix plates or accessories from brands like RRS, Arca-Swiss, Kirk, or Acratech, is the screw clamp the better choice?

I used an RRS lever clamp for a short while long ago (shortly after the lever design came out, if memory serves). (We needed a new support system at work for some product photography and I convinced them to get this gear.) I had heard that only certain plates were compatible, so gave it a shot. Of course, the RRS plates fit just fine. I have an old Arca-Swiss brand "universal" plate that fit just fine, too. I also had an old Kirk plate -- which had seen lots of use and some of the anodized black was wearing off -- and that plate fit differently. It didn't clamp quite as tightly, however it seemed a perfectly fine tight to me. There was no movement to it, but when pushing the lever to clamp, it closed just a little easier.

FWIW, I have an AS B1 (screw-type clamp) and I always thought I wanted a lever clamp because it would be faster and easier to use. I didn't dislike the screw system, and it really is fast to use by sliding the plate in through the side and turning screw knob about a half turn. I was wrong, in that I didn't find the lever to be any faster or easier to use, and since the screw knob doesn't leave me with the fear that I may accidentally pull the lever, it's the system I prefer.

Yes—if you expect to mix Arca-Swiss-style plates from different brands, a screw-knob clamp is the safer choice.

The key issue is that “Arca-Swiss compatible” is not perfectly standardized. Plate widths and tolerances can vary between manufacturers, and even small differences can affect how a lever clamp fits. Community experience here suggests RRS lever clamps work well with RRS plates and can work with some Arca-Swiss and Kirk plates, but the fit may vary.

A screw clamp is infinitely adjustable, so it’s generally the most tolerant option for mixed-brand plates and accessories. That makes it the better all-around choice if you may use plates, rails, or nodal slides from multiple makers.

If you plan to stay entirely within one system, a lever clamp can be fast and convenient. But for maximum compatibility and fewer surprises, the screw clamp is the more flexible answer.
