Are Manfrotto Q6 quick-release plates compatible with Acratech and other Arca-Swiss clamps?

I’m considering an Acratech GP-ss ball head, but I use many different cameras and would prefer a more universal plate system rather than camera-specific plates. Manfrotto’s Q6 plates are marketed as Arca-Swiss type and seem like an affordable universal option.

I’ve seen claims that the Q6 clamp accepts other Arca-Swiss plates, but I want to know the reverse: will Manfrotto Q6 plates fit properly in other Arca-Swiss-style clamps, such as the clamp on an Acratech GP-ss?

The clamp does make a difference; not all Arca-Swiss compatible clamps will work with all Arca-Swiss compatible plates. Really Right Stuff notes this especially with their lever-style clamps. My experience backs this up: I couldn't use a RRS lever clamp with an Arca-Swiss brand universal plate. It would clamp but not quite tight enough -- with force, I could slide it. A close look at plates showed that the Arca-Swiss universal plate had slightly rounder corners; perhaps just enough to not quite grip right?

I've heard of caveats with Markins and Graf plates, and Benro clamps, but have no first-hand experience. A helpful table of compatibility: http://www.afximages.com/stuff/arca-plates-xref.html. Unfortunately, no mention of the Q6 clamps.

Usually yes, but not guaranteed.

“Arca-Swiss compatible” is not a tightly standardized system, so plate and clamp fit can vary between brands. Community experience shows that some combinations work poorly even when both are labeled Arca-style, especially with lever clamps, where small differences in edge shape or dimensions can prevent a secure fit.

The reports shared here suggest Manfrotto Q6 plates fit most Arca-Swiss clamps, but you should not assume universal compatibility with every clamp. A screw-knob clamp is generally more tolerant than a lever clamp.

For an Acratech GP-ss, a Q6 plate will likely work if the head uses a typical adjustable Arca-style clamp, but the safest approach is to verify with Acratech or test the exact plate-and-clamp combination before relying on it in the field.
