This seminar with Bobbi Lane presents essential lighting techniques and tools for the photographer to create the impact and range of mood for the portrait.

Low Key traditionally is a dark or black background, with more side lighting and shadows for a dramatic and evocative portrait. Light is the essence of a successful portrait, so understanding the three key elements; direction, quality and depth, is crucial. Controlling these elements is essential in terms of retaining detail in both shadows and highlights without sacrificing your choices for establishing mood.

We will demonstrate many creative methods of lighting and why to choose certain modifiers. The technical set up for high-key and low-key lighting will be fully explained and demonstrated!

  • NJCS: Techniques of Dragging the Shutter with Bobbi Lane (Fujifilm)

    Class Code: UUU8242

    Skill Level:
    Everyone

Balancing strobe and ambient light is tricky but the results can be amazing. We use the flash to illuminate the subject, and slow the shutter speed (hence the term “dragging”) to pull in the background ambient light.

Once you get the basic concept of how to set your flash and what camera settings to use, it’s easy and fun to experiment. We'll first learn how to get the proper balance of exposure between the two light sources-flash and ambient- then we play by shaking or spinning the camera, zooming the lens, panning and more. The flash will light the subject and freeze any motion, and then moving the camera will blur the background in a variety of ways.

Join Bobbi Lane for this fun and creative class!

  • NJCS: Light it, Shoot it, Print it... with Bob Davis (Canon)

    Class Code: UUU8250

    Skill Level:
    Everyone

The word photography comes from Greek words meaning to write or draw with light. Photography is a process of making pictures by the action of light. Light is reflected from an object to form an image on a material sensitive to light. Now that the history lesson’s over, lets get into it.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a seeker of Light! I study light, Natural light, Continuous light, Speedlites, Strobes, it’s all Light. I’m an available light shooter and I will use all the Light available to me. My tool of choice is Speedlites, small portable flashes that I can control wirelessly from camera. I never leave home with less than four Speedlites! This class I’m going to share how I use, control and shape light to capture the subject in their best possible light.

I feel lighting is more important than ever before, I’ve noticed many photographers today use “available light” and “high ISO”! In some situations this works, I don’t know about you but most environments I shoot in it’s DARK. Adding a kiss of light makes all the difference.

Join me as we light it, shoot it, and then print it! Prints matter, for me it’s not a picture until you print it. I will share my approach to location portraits and event photography. I will be using Canon EOS 1DXMII’s with a variety of lenses, 600EX RT Speedlites and Westcott Deep Umbrellas.

It’s all about the quality of light.
