The Canon F-1 was the brand's first professional SLR system that allowed attachment for various interchangeable accessories and parts such lenses and finders. A Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 lens also provided with the camera. The exposure metering of the camera is handled by the TTL full-aperture mechanism that is powered by a CdS photocell. A standard pentaprism viewfinder is attached to the camera, which has 0.77× magnification and 97% screen coverage. A Fresnel lens is incorporated into the viewfinder, which has a split-image spot at the center. You can opt for other compatible viewfinders to use with this camera. The camera allows you adjust the film speed from ASA 25–3200. An electronic flash and flashbulb can be connected to the camera via X-sync and FP contact.

Optics and Focus

The lens provided with the camera has a focal length of 50mm which gives a view of a human eye. Its wide aperture of f/1.4 offers bright pictures with shallow depth of field. The lens construction comprises 7 optical elements arranged in 6 groups. A super spectra coating is applied to reduce reflections. You have to manually focus the lens to click a clear photograph of an object as close as 0.45 m. The 8-blade diaphragm produces smooth bokeh in the background. This camera has a TTL full-aperture exposure metering done through a CdS photocell. You can speed up the shutter to a maximum limit of 1/2000th of a second to capture crisp shots of a moving object. The Canon Auto Tuning system controls the diaphragm by the recharge completion signal and focusing distance signal.

Sensor and Screen

The camera has a pentaprism viewfinder that has 0.77× magnification and 97% coverage of the actual image. You can see the exposure metering needle, aperture needle, outer shutter speed coupling indicator, stopped-down metering range, exposure limit marks, shutter speed scale, and battery check in the viewfinder.

Image and Video

The camera uses 35mm film rolls to capture exposures. You can wind the film by advancing the lever by 139° or by series of short strokes with a 30° stand-off angle. The film rewind button also allows you to take multiple exposures on a single frame. You can view the number of exposures taken on the frame counter.

Other features

The camera allows you to attach an electronic flash to the accessory shoe and synchronize it with the shutter speed at 1/60th of a second. This camera synchronizes FP and MF class flashbulbs at a maximum limit of 1/2000th and 1/30th of a second respectively. Keep a note of the current film you are using in the memo holder. The self-timer releases the shutter after 10 seconds of delay. Use a 1.35 V battery to power the exposure meter of the camera.
