The Canon AE-1 Program Chrome is an upgraded successor of the AE-1 to make it easy to use in varied light conditions. The camera fits lenses with FD mounts. Apart from the programmed AE mode, the camera includes shutter-priority-based exposure and manual mode. The camera has an ISO limit of 3200 and maximum shutter speed of 1/1000th of a second. It comes with a manual focusing system and a Depth of Field (DOF) preview button. With the dedicated hot shoe, an electronic flash can be mounted on this camera. The Canon AE-1 Program includes other features like auto-exposure lock, self-timer, PC sync terminal, and body grip.
The Canon AE-1 Program uses through-the-lens center-weighted exposure metering. It features the programmed AE mode that optimizes the shutter and aperture automatically. Two other exposure modes are based on aperture priority and manual mode. With the AE lock, the camera adjusts the over exposure created by a bright background or foreground. You may use the rotating dial to switch between AE modes. The shutter speed of the camera can be increased to 1/1000th of a second.
This classic Canon camera has a fixed eye-level pentaprism viewfinder that offers a screen coverage of 94% on both vertical and horizontal axes. Additionally, the viewfinder has a split-image rangefinder integrated into its design that helps focus on a subject. Relevant information regarding aperture, auto exposure, camera shakes, flash, and stopped-down metering are also displayed in the viewfinder. An eyepiece is provided that has the diopter set at the standard -1 m.
The Canon AE-1 Program Chrome works with 35mm film rolls that have a speed range of ASA 12 to 3200. A single-stroke lever, which has a 120° throw and a 30° stand-off, is provided to advance the film. The self-additive frame counter resets to ‘S’ if you open the camera back and counts backward when the film is rewound.
The classic Canon AE-1 Program has a hot shoe that can be used for attaching an electronic flash. The flash can be synchronized with the shutter at 1/60th of a second. A PC sync terminal is also provided for cord-type flash devices. This camera offers full AE flash photography with select Canon speedlites. The self-timer lets your delay the shutter release by up to 10 seconds. If you want to cancel the timer, then simply press the battery-check button or shift the main switch to ‘L’. By using the DOF preview button, you may check whether the depth of field in the image suits your need or not. This camera has an interchangeable screen design that makes it easy to use different focusing screens. It runs on a single 6V alkaline-manganese, silver-oxide, or lithium battery.
