Overview
The Sony Alpha a6400 is a compact mirrorless camera aimed at serious beginners and intermediate enthusiasts alike. It features Sony's fastest autofocus system powered by the 24.2MP APS-C Exmor CMOS image sensor and the upgraded BIONZ X image processor. The camera offers UHD 4K video shooting as well as 11 fps continuous image capture. You can flip the 3-inch LCD at 180° when recording vlogs. The XGA OLED Tru-finder EVF provides a 2.36m-dot resolution live view. This Sony mirrorless camera comes with log gamma profiles such as the S-Log2 and S-Log3 for professional color grading. The built-in Wi-Fi with NFC makes it easy to transfer photos and remotely operate the camera from your smartphone.
Optics and Focus
The Sony a6400 mirrorless camera is accompanied by the E 18–135mm f/3.5–5.6 OSS lens. You can also mount other Sony E lenses. The inclusion of two Extra-low Dispersion elements and one aspherical element ensures clarity and throughout the zoom range. The lens comes with a linear AF motor that provides quick and accurate autofocus. With the Optical SteadyShot, the lens reduces unwanted camera shakes. The rounded 7-blade diaphragm produces smooth bokeh. As for the camera, its fast hybrid autofocus system offers a response in 0.02 seconds. There are up to 425 AF areas of phase detection and contrast detection points in the AF system, covering 84% of the imaging area. The real-time tracking along with the real-time eye AF keeps subjects in focus even if they are moving at a rapid pace. With the mechanical shutter, you can take photos of fast-moving objects without the rolling shutter effect. The electronic shutter is useful when photographing wildlife.
Sensor and Screen
The Sony a6400 mirrorless camera performs excellently in low light with the 24.2MP APS-C Exmor CMOS image sensor. Even at a high ISO level of up to 6400, the camera keeps the image quality top-notch in low light. You can take high or low angle shots with the 3-inch tilting LCD. The monitor can be tilted at 180° for recording vlogs. You can easily focus on a subject and navigate through different menus thanks to the touchscreen design. The XGA Tru-finder EVF lets you compose the shot in 2.36m-dot resolution. It has a 120 fps mode that prevents lag when tracking fast-moving subjects.
Image and Video
The Sony a6400 mirrorless digital camera boasts its 4K recording capabilities. Its Full HD video capture also works best for uploading videos on online video sharing platforms. In the 1080p mode, you can set the frame rate from 1 to 120 fps to create slow and quick-motion videos. The camera can take 24 MP pictures in a maximum resolution of 6000×4000 pixels. You can select the JPEG format for instant sharing or take images in RAW for utilizing the dynamic range. The camera's burst shooting mode captures consecutive pictures at 11 fps with the mechanical shutter. You get a continuous shooting speed of 8 fps with the electronic shutter. Record videos in log gamma profiles such as the S-Log2 and S-Log3 to add LUTs when color grading the footage. An HDMI port is provided to connect an HLG-compatible monitor for viewing the gamma footage in normal colors. The zebra function makes it easy to see overexposed areas. You can record time-lapse sequences with the interval timer by setting the duration between 1 to 60 seconds.
Other Features
The Sony a6400 links to your smartphone or tablet with its built-in Wi-Fi and NFC. After connecting the camera to your handheld device, you can transfer images from the a6400 or remote control it via the Sony PlayMemories app. The built-in flash allows you to capture photos in low light. An external flash can be mounted on the hot shoe. With the 3.5mm audio port, you can connect an on-camera microphone. Eight customizable keys and eighty-nine assignable functions allow you to change the control layout. The magnesium-alloy construction makes the camera lightweight and durable. An NP-FW50 Li-ion battery is provided with the camera.
