The Pentax 645N lets you experience the charm of film photography with benefits of a digital camera. It can be used with Pentax AF-mount lenses. The auto-exposure mode in the camera can be set to shutter-priority, aperture priority, or program AE mode. This camera has both 3-point autofocus system and manual focus mode. The electronic focal-plane shutter can speed up to 1/1000th of a second. The camera comes with additional features such as a self-timer and a hot shoe.
Optics and Focus
The Pentax 645N is designed with a 3-point autofocus system that includes phase matching and switchable spot focusing. The camera automatically adjusts the exposure based on aperture- or shutter-priority settings. With the program AE mode, the camera determines the correct exposure by calculating values of both aperture and shutter speed. Its ISO can reach a maximum limit of 6400, while the shutter has a fast release speed of up to 1/1000th of a second.
Sensor and Screen
The Pentax 645N SLR camera is fitted with a Keplerian telescopic viewfinder that has a matte focusing screen. It provides a field of view of 92% on the vertical axis and 93% on the horizontal axis. In the viewfinder, you get to see the current focus setting, shutter speed, high or low exposure warning, flash-ready indication, and other related information. The rectangle LCD at the top shows the film speed, film status, exposure data, frame count, and battery-exhaustion warning.
Image and Video
You may use the Pentax 645N camera with different film formats such as 120mm, 220mm, and 70mm. The camera has a semi-automatic loading mechanism for 120mm and 220mm film rolls. As for the 70mm film, the camera uses a fully automatic loading function. The built-in motor in the auto-winding film system prepares the next frame in seconds. You may also print exposure data such as shutter speed, aperture, metering mode, and focal length on the outer side of the picture frame.
Other Features
A hot shoe with X-synchronization is provided in the camera, which can be used for mounting an electronic flash. After the flash is mounted, the camera synchronizes it to 1/60th of a second. The self-timer function allows you to delay the shutter release up to 12 seconds. The camera runs on six 1.5V lithium or alkaline batteries.
