Riding the curtails of Google Glass, Olympus has jammed their foot in the door of the future with their entry into the "augmented reality display" market...it's going to take a while to get used to saying that. Dubbed the MEG4.0, these wearable (I wouldn't go as far as saying fashionable) specs feature a 320x240 virtual display that apparently will not obstruct view, but will still be bright enough to see in strong sunlight. This is good considering we have enough to distract us while driving. Olympus boasts that it will be able to connect to smartphones and tablets via bluetooth, includes an accelerometer to track orientation, and will weigh only 30g...another nice thing since no one wants to be hunkered down by massive astronaut helmets. One thing that already looks like an issue is battery life. They say it has up to 8 hours of battery life, but with the projection constantly running it will take you down to about 2 hours. Perhaps the most surprising thing missing from these glasses of the future is a camera. Is Olympus (primarily a camera manufacturer) bowing out of the market by excluding a camera or did they just want to beat Google to the finish line? It's too early to say how much these glasses will cost or when they will be available, but it is interesting to see Google getting competition from those other than Apple. It's only a matter of time before they make a patent and say that others stole their idea...
