Self-Perception and Photography

A fairly common phenomenon that photographers encounter is negative critique from their subject...more plainly stated, it's that "Ewww delete that picture of me now!" moment after pressing the playback button. It usually takes a few shots before one is deemed satisfactory, but there seems to be something peculiar going on. Do we have such poor self-esteem or is there some other complex going on? This short TED talk opens this question about self-perception and photography. Although it doesn't exactly come to any scientific explanation, it does bring up a good point that the only view of ourselves that we're accustomed to on a daily basis is the one from a mirror.  When we are confronted with an image from a camera, we recognize that it is us, but it doesn't match up with the self image in our heads. This is why you must always trust your photographer ;-)
