As a kid I loved creating things out of Lego and K'nex, but the idea of making something useful wasn't really on my hyperactive mind. The latest camera from the film fanatics at Lomography would have made the child version of me pretty happy (for as long as my ADD would allow at least). Meet the Konstruktor: A fully functional DIY camera that you build from scratch, just like a model car. Unlike most Lego cameras you see on the internet, you can actually put a roll in it and take pictures. Figure that!
The kit comes with everything you need to assemble it, except for the patience you'll need when handling tiny screws. Lomography says to set aside at least an hour or two...but I'd like to put them to that challenge. What you get at the end is a neat little 35mm pinhole camera that features a top down viewfinder, detachable 50mm f/10 lens, maximum shutter speed of 1/80s, Bulb mode and stickers. Don't forget stickers. There's something very zen about being able to use a camera you just made with your own two hands, despite it being a toy camera that produces Holga-like images. If you're concerned about image quality, this probably isn't for you...The Konstruktor retails for only $35 and is a great way to introduce your kids to film while it's still around.
