I’m considering the Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G for use on a Nikon D5100. Is this lens compatible with the camera, and will autofocus work? I’d also like to know any practical limitations of this lens/body combination.

This lens uses a screw driven AF, meaning the body drives the AF. The D5xxx series and D3xxx series of cameras need AF-S lenses in order to AF with them.

The lens is mount-compatible with the Nikon D5100, so it should fit and can be used manually. However, autofocus will not work.

The key issue is that the 28-80mm AF Zoom-Nikkor is a screw-drive AF lens, and the D5100 does not have the in-body focus motor needed to drive that type of autofocus. On Nikon D3xxx and D5xxx bodies, you generally need AF-S lenses for autofocus.

So, in practice:

  • it should mount and be usable
  • autofocus is not supported
  • you would need to focus manually

If autofocus is important, look for a Nikon AF-S standard zoom instead.
