I'm considering the Nikon AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Nikkor lens. The product page says it is not compatible with the Nikon D40, D40x, D60, and D5000. Will this lens work on my Nikon D80, and will autofocus function normally?

Yes it will work. Those cameras don't feature an in body focus motor and won't autofocus with any "AF" lens. Your D80 should be fine with any AF or newer AF-S lens.

Yes. The Nikon D80 is compatible with the AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6G and autofocus should work normally.
The warning about the D40, D40x, D60, and D5000 applies because those bodies do not have an in-camera focus motor, so older Nikon "AF" lenses won’t autofocus on them unless the lens has its own motor (such as AF-S).
The D80 does have a built-in focus motor, so it can autofocus with Nikon AF lenses as well as newer AF-S lenses. In general, the D80 supports a wide range of Nikon F-mount lenses.
