Can my older Nikon AF and Sigma lenses be used on a Nikon D300?

I have these lenses from a Nikon F601m and want to know if they will work on a used Nikon D300:

  • Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8
  • Nikon AF Nikkor 28mm f/2.8
  • Sigma UC Zoom 70-210mm f/4-5.6

Will they mount and function properly on the D300, and are there any limitations I should expect?

Yes—these lenses should generally mount and work on a Nikon D300.

The D300 uses the Nikon F mount and includes an in-body focus motor, so older AF Nikkor lenses like your 50mm f/1.8 and 28mm f/2.8 should autofocus and meter normally, provided they are standard Nikon AF lenses and not unusual non-AI manual versions.

Your Sigma UC 70-210mm for Nikon F mount should also mount if it was made for Nikon AF film bodies. With older third-party lenses, the main caution is compatibility: some older Sigma lenses may have limited functionality or occasional issues on newer digital bodies, but many work fine.

A few practical notes:

  • The D300 is a DX-format camera, so the field of view will be narrower than on your F601m film body.
  • The 50mm will behave like a short telephoto on DX.
  • The 28mm will act more like a normal lens.
  • Check that the Sigma lens has a Nikon F mount and electronic contacts.

So, in most cases: yes, your lenses are usable on a D300, with the usual DX crop effect and possible third-party Sigma compatibility caveats.
