I have a Nikon D3100 and want to use the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G lens. Will it work properly on this camera, including autofocus?

AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1.8G will work fine on D3100 as all G lenses will. G (gelded) lenses have built in focusing motor and don't need camera screw driver motor to focus them, which is not present on Nikon 3xxx and 5xxx series.

Yes. The Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8G is fully compatible with the Nikon D3100 and should work well.
The key point is that AF-S lenses have a built-in focus motor. The D3100 does not have the older in-body screw-drive autofocus motor, so it needs lenses with their own motor for autofocus. Because this lens is AF-S, autofocus will work on the D3100.
It will also meter and operate normally as a G-type lens on this camera.
