Can I use the Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8G on a Nikon D5500 DX camera?

I'm new to photography and found a good deal on the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G. I use a Nikon D5500, which has a DX (crop-sensor) format. Since this lens is described as an FX-format prime, I'm confused whether it will work properly on my camera. Will autofocus work on the D5500, and what field of view should I expect compared with full frame?

You can use any FX format Nikon lens on a DX format Nikon camera. On your D5500 the smaller sensor means it will only capture roughly the middle half of the light circle projected by the lens. This is what is referred to as the crop factor. Since your Nikon D5500 has a crop factor of 1.5X, the 50mm FX lens will give the same angle of view as a 75mm FX lens would on an FX camera. Keep in mind that a 50mm DX lens would also give the same field of view on your D5500: that of a 75mm FX lens on an FX camera.

Yes. The Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8G will work on a Nikon D5500.
The lens is labeled FX because it is designed to cover a full-frame Nikon sensor, but FX lenses can also be used on Nikon DX bodies like the D5500. On a DX camera, the smaller sensor uses only the center part of the lens’s image circle.
Because the D5500 has a 1.5x crop factor, this 50mm lens gives a field of view similar to a 75mm lens on a full-frame camera. So it behaves more like a short telephoto/portrait lens than a “normal” 50mm would on FX.
Autofocus will also work, because the 50mm f/1.8G is an AF-S lens with its own focus motor, and the D5500 supports AF-S autofocus lenses.
In short: it is fully compatible, autofocus works, and the view will be tighter than on full frame.
