I use a Nikon D3100 and am considering the AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D lens. Will autofocus work on this camera, or would it be manual focus only? If it will not autofocus, is there a Nikon 50mm or similar fast prime that will autofocus on the D3100?

From Nikon, no, you cannot. You can manually focus, but no AF with an AF lens.

No. The Nikon D3100 does not have an in-body focus motor, so it will not autofocus with the AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D. You can still use that lens with manual focus.

For autofocus on the D3100, look for Nikon lenses with their own built-in focus motor, such as AF-S models. A commonly suggested alternative is the AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8, which will autofocus on the D3100.

In short: 50mm f/1.8D on D3100 = manual focus only; AF-S lenses = autofocus supported.
