Will a Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D autofocus on a Nikon D3100?

I’m using a Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D on a Nikon D3100. The lens doesn’t have an AF/M switch like my other lens. Can this combination autofocus, or is manual focus the only option? If it won’t autofocus, what type of Nikon 50mm lens would I need for autofocus on a D3100?

Unfortunately not, as this lens does not have a built-in AF motor, and neither do the D3X00 or D5X00 camera families from Nikon. Your camera will only have autofocus with Nikon lenses marked AF-S, or compatible lenses from other makers that include built-in focusing motors.

No. The Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D does not have a built-in autofocus motor, and the Nikon D3100 body does not include the screw-drive motor needed to autofocus that lens. On a D3100, this lens is manual-focus only.
For autofocus on your camera, you need a Nikon lens with its own focusing motor, such as an AF-S model, or a compatible third-party lens with a built-in motor.
If your manual-focus shots look sharp in the viewfinder but come out blurry, that can also be due to camera shake or very shallow depth of field at f/1.4, not just focus error. Try using a faster shutter speed, stopping down a bit, and using your camera’s focus confirmation indicator while focusing manually.
