Will a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 with a 58mm filter thread fit my Nikon D300?

I want to buy a 50mm f/1.8 for my Nikon D300. The lens listing says the filter attachment size is 58mm, but my current kit lens uses 72mm filters. Does the 58mm size affect whether the lens will fit my camera, or is that only for filters? Do I need any adapter rings?

Don't worry. That size is for attaching filters (for example, polarizing or colored) to the front of the lens. The lens mount, on the back side, is standardized and is the same for all Nikon F-mount lenses (which your camera uses).
