Why won’t a 58mm filter thread onto my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4?

I bought a 58mm HOYA circular polarizer for my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4, which is listed as having a 58mm filter thread, but it will not screw on. It also doesn’t fit my 18-55 kit lens. Am I doing something wrong, or could the filter or lens threads be damaged?

I happen to own the exact same model of lens and filter, and they do fit.
Check the image to see if your equipment differs in any way, or if you are trying to attach it in any other way:

A 58mm filter should fit the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4, so the size itself is not the issue. Most likely causes are:
- the filter is being started on the wrong side or backwards
- the threads are not catching cleanly because filter threads can be very fine and picky
- the filter or lens threads may be damaged or cross-threaded
Try attaching it gently, making sure you are using the side of the filter with the lens-mount thread. Don’t force it. If it feels tight immediately, back off and try again to avoid cross-threading.
A good test is to try a different 58mm filter on the lens, or try this filter on another known 58mm-thread lens. If other filters also won’t mount, inspect the lens threads closely for dents or damage. If only this filter won’t fit, the filter threads may be defective or bent.
Since your 18-55 kit lens usually uses a different filter size, failure there may not indicate a problem unless that lens is also 58mm.
