How can I determine the filter thread size of an older lens?

I have an older Olympus OM 50mm f/1.8 lens and want to fit accessories such as a matte box or filter adapter for video use. The lens itself doesn’t appear to show the thread size. What’s the best way to find the correct filter thread diameter on an older lens?

49mm
It never fails to research the lens and read the specs online. And there will be no room for mistake there:
Look for 'filter size', naturally.

Check the lens specifications for its filter size, either in the manual or from a reliable lens-spec source online. For the Olympus OM 50mm f/1.8, the filter thread size is 49mm.
If you can’t find the specs, you can measure the front filter threads with a ruler or caliper. Measure across the thread opening: the measured diameter will usually be about 1mm smaller than the nominal filter size, so a reading around 48mm indicates a 49mm thread. Since standard filter sizes come in common set increments, you only need an approximate measurement to identify the correct size.
