Will a Nikon 18-200mm DX lens still make sense if I upgrade from a D70 later?

I shoot mostly travel and scout/event snapshots with a Nikon D70 and an 18-70mm lens, which often feels too short. I'm considering an 18-200mm style superzoom for the extra reach and convenience, but my D70 is fairly old and I may replace the body in a few years.

Is buying a superzoom lens now a sensible investment, or is it better to wait and upgrade body and lens together? Also, how likely is it that a lens bought for the D70 would remain compatible with a future Nikon body?

A good lens is a lasting investment that will outlive generations of camera bodies. But you should be aware of these general considerations when buying a lens.

  1. The greater the zoom range the lower the resolution, the greater the distortions and the smaller the maximum aperture. This is an unavoidable law of lenses. Thus a prime lens is capable of the highest quality, moderate zoom lenses are capable of intermediate quality while the long, so-called super-zoom, lenses have the lowest quality. It is a trade-off, convenience vs image quality that will depend on your needs and circumstances.
  2. High resolution camera bodies will reveal the shortcomings in your lenses. Your Nikon D70 has a 6 Mp sensor and this low resolution sensor will not reveal the shortcomings of a long zoom lens like the 18-200. But when you upgrade to a new, high resolution body you will find the shortcomings of the lens become very obvious. At the same time you will have become a more experienced photographer who expects more from his equipment.

Many photographers happily make this compromise while others demand the highest possible sharpness and will only use prime lenses. It is your choice but you need to be aware that upgrading to a modern, high quality body will make the compromise more obvious.

Yes—buying a lens now can be a sensible investment. Nikon F-mount lenses generally remain usable across multiple camera generations, so a lens you buy for a D70 should still work on a later Nikon DSLR.

The main caveat is format: an 18-200mm is typically a DX lens, so it’s best matched to future DX bodies. If you expect to move to full frame later, that matters.

As for whether to upgrade the body first: if the D70’s limitations don’t currently frustrate you, a new lens will often affect your shooting more than a new body. For travel and general snapshots, an 18-200mm can be very convenient.

Just remember the trade-off: superzooms give flexibility and portability, but usually sacrifice some image quality versus shorter-range zooms or prime lenses. They tend to have more distortion, lower sharpness, and smaller maximum apertures. On a 6 MP D70, those weaknesses may be less obvious than on a newer, higher-resolution body.

So if convenience matters most, buying the lens now is reasonable; if ultimate image quality matters most, consider a less extreme zoom range instead.
