Why won’t the aperture change on my Canon 60D in M or Av mode?

I’m using a Canon 60D with a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6. In Manual and Aperture Priority mode, turning the rear control wheel with the SET button in the middle does not change the aperture. I’m new to cameras and not sure if I’m missing a setting. What would cause this, and how can I fix it?

It sounds like your control wheel is "locked" - press the button underneath it called "unlock" This should now let you control the aperture.

Most likely the rear control wheel is locked. On the Canon 60D, if that wheel is locked, turning it won’t change settings like aperture in M or Av mode.
Try pressing the button under the rear wheel marked for lock/unlock to enable the wheel again. Once unlocked, the wheel should adjust aperture normally.
If this keeps happening, you can also change the camera’s auto-lock behavior in the menu. Look for the Lock setting (shown with a wheel icon) and disable or adjust it if you don’t want the wheel to lock automatically.
