Why won’t Photoshop CS5 update to Camera Raw 8.2?

I’m using Photoshop CS5 (version 12.0.4) together with Lightroom 5. When I try to edit Canon 550D CR2 files, I get a message saying Camera Raw 8.2 is required. I downloaded and installed the plug-in, and the installer said it completed successfully, but Photoshop still shows Camera Raw 6.4. Why isn’t the update working, and what should I do?

CR 8.2 is for Photoshop CC, and will not be usable by CS5 or CS6.

Photoshop CS5 cannot use Camera Raw 8.2. That version of the Camera Raw plug-in is for newer Photoshop versions (such as CC), so installing it won’t upgrade CS5 beyond the version it supports.

That’s why Photoshop still shows Camera Raw 6.4: CS5 is limited by compatibility, not by the installer.

What to do:

  • Check Adobe’s Camera Raw compatibility chart for the highest version supported by CS5.
  • If Lightroom 5 can open the file, continue processing it there and export to Photoshop in another format if needed.
  • If you specifically need newer Camera Raw support in Photoshop, you’ll need a newer Photoshop version.
