I used to be able to transfer photos from my Nikon D3200 to my MacBook, but it no longer works. Do I need a software update, or is there another way to import the images?

Why don't you try to transfer photos using the card with a card reader, there is no need for any software while transferring with a card.
Just buy a card reader, attach it to USB port, plug in your card and transfer.

You may not need any software update. A simple workaround is to skip the camera-to-computer connection and transfer the photos directly from the memory card.
Remove the SD card from the Nikon D3200, insert it into a card reader, connect the reader to your MacBook’s USB port (or use the built-in slot if your Mac has one), and copy the files that way. This is a common, straightforward method and usually avoids connection issues between the camera and computer.
So the most practical solution suggested is: use an SD card reader rather than connecting the camera itself.
