Why won’t my Zeikos extension tube fit a Nikon D5100 and 18-55mm lens?

I bought a Zeikos macro extension tube to use with a Nikon D5100 and the 18-55mm kit lens, but neither side of the tube fits the camera body or the lens. I’m trying to confirm which side should mount to the camera and which to the lens, or whether I may have bought the wrong mount version altogether.

It appears that you have received the Canon EF-mount tube set, not the Nikon F (AF) version. The contacts and alignment aids are where you'd expect them for Canon EF, and the pass-through screw drive for Nikon AF is missing. Not surprising, then, that it won't fit your Nikon gear.

You most likely bought the wrong mount version. Based on the mount details described, the tube appears to be a Canon EF version, not a Nikon F-mount version for your D5100.
That’s why it won’t attach to either the camera or the 18-55mm lens. A Nikon D5100 uses the Nikon F mount, so the extension tube must be specifically made for Nikon F. If you want autofocus/aperture communication support, it also needs the correct Nikon-compatible electronic contacts, and some designs differ depending on AF support.
In normal use, an extension tube mounts between the camera body and the lens: one side attaches to the camera body, and the lens attaches to the other side. But if the mount type is wrong, neither side will fit properly.
So the fix is to exchange or return this tube set and get the Nikon F-mount version made for Nikon DSLR lenses.
