Nikon D5100 won't focus with one 18-55mm lens, but other lens/body combinations work

A Nikon D5100 body works with another lens, and this 18-55mm kit lens works normally on a different camera body. But when this specific 18-55mm lens is mounted on the D5100, neither autofocus nor manual focus works. What should be checked first?

You should check that the contacts are clean. These transmit power and control information from the camera body to the lens. I suspect that there's something interfering on either the lens or body that just happens to not align problematically with the slightly-different fit of another lens, or this lens on another camera body.
As a first pass, try microfiber cloth. If that doesn't work, you could also try isopropyl alcohol, but be very, very careful to not drip that into the camera.

The first thing to check is the electrical contacts on both the lens and the camera mount. Since the lens works on another body and the D5100 works with another lens, the most likely issue is poor contact between this specific lens/body combination.
Try this:
- Remove the lens and inspect the metal contacts on both the lens and camera.
- Gently clean them with a clean microfiber cloth.
- If needed, carefully use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on the cloth or a swab, but do not let any liquid drip into the camera or lens.
- Reattach the lens firmly and test again.
Because autofocus control and lens communication depend on those contacts, even slight dirt or interference can cause focusing to fail on one lens/body pairing while other combinations still work.
