Nikon D7100 stopped autofocusing with both lenses after changing lenses

My Nikon D7100 had always autofocused normally with the 18-55mm AF-S kit lens. After removing that lens for the first time in years and mounting a Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S, autofocus stopped working. I checked the AF/M switches on both the camera body and lens, reset settings, and cleaned the contacts. When I reattached the original 18-55mm, it also would not autofocus. What should I check next to restore autofocus?

A few things you can try.

  • Make sure the lens is fully seated and when you rotate it you hear the lens release button click (page 27 in your manual). If you can remove your lens without pressing the lens release button, your lens isn't mounted properly.
  • Check the focus mode switches on the body and lens (you indicate you have done this). You may want to flick the switches to manual and back to auto in case the switch contacts are dirty.
  • Make sure the lens contacts are clean (you indicate you have done this).
  • Reset the camera to factory defaults (see page 131 in your manual). This may clear up a menu setting that was inadvertently set.

Since autofocus now fails with both AF-S lenses, first check the simple mounting and switch issues.

  • Make sure each lens is fully seated and locked. Rotate the lens until it clicks into place. If a lens can be removed without pressing the lens-release button, it is not mounted correctly.
  • Toggle the focus switches on both the camera body and the lens from manual to autofocus and back again, then leave them in AF/M-A. Sometimes a dirty or intermittent switch contact can cause this.
  • Re-clean the electronic contacts on the lens and camera mount.
  • Perform a full factory reset of the D7100, in case a setting was changed accidentally.

Because both lenses show the same problem, the issue is more likely with mounting, contacts, switches, or a camera setting than with the new 50mm lens itself. If none of those steps help, the body may need inspection or service.
