Why did autofocus stop working on both lenses after testing my Nikon 50mm f/1.8G on another body?

I have a Nikon D5300 with a Nikon 50mm f/1.8G and a Tamron 18-200. Both worked fine for about 10 months. I borrowed a Nikon D300 and mounted the 50mm on it; autofocus worked at first. After pressing the lens release button near the mount, the lens stopped autofocusing. When I put the 50mm back on my D5300, autofocus still did not work. I then tried the Tamron 18-200 on the D5300, and autofocus also would not work. What likely happened, and what should I check?

Interesting question. I bought the 50mm f1.8G a few months back. It went on and off my old D70 with no issues, but on my D810 it felt stiff when turning into the bayonet fitting. The lens release button also felt stiff, and autofocus didn't operate. When I took it off and tried another lens, there was still a problem with autofocus, but when I took that lens off, looked at the mount and contacts, and put it on again it operated as expected.
The cameras and lens seem to be fine ever since and I've also had that lens on a D3200, but now I've read your question I'm wondering whether the 50mm f1.8G mounts or electrical contacts are stiff when new. It's worth checking the electronic contacts on both the camera and the lens to see they're not misaligned or damaged - it looks like I got away with it.
Hope it works out for you.

The most likely issue is not that both lenses suddenly failed, but that there’s a mount/contact problem on the camera after swapping lenses. One community reply described the 50mm f/1.8G feeling stiff on the mount, and autofocus stopped until the lens was removed, the mount and electronic contacts were checked, and the lens was reattached.
Check these first:
- Remove the lens and inspect the metal mount and electronic contacts on both camera and lens.
- Make sure the lens is fully seated and locked when remounted.
- Look for bent, dirty, or damaged contacts.
- Try removing and reattaching the lens carefully.
Because autofocus then failed with your Tamron on the D5300 as well, the problem is more likely with the camera body connection or lens mounting than with the 50mm alone. If the contacts or mount look damaged, stop forcing anything and have the camera inspected.
