Why won't my F-mount extension tubes lock onto a Nikon D5100?

My Nikon D5100 initially accepted my F-mount extension tubes, but after removing them and shooting with a lens alone, the tubes would no longer twist fully into place and click/lock. They insert into the mount, but stop before locking, so the camera does not recognize them. Regular lenses still mount normally, and the same extension tubes still attach to an Nikon F100. What could cause extension tubes to fit one Nikon body but not lock onto the D5100?

Turns out the extension tubes have a little tab on the edge that was getting jammed against another tab on the rim of the f-mount (which is on a spring and supposed to get pushed down), preventing the extension tubes from being twisted around completely and locked into place. enter image description here

A likely cause is a small mechanical interference at the F-mount. On the extension tube there is a little tab at the edge, and on the camera mount there is another spring-loaded tab on the rim that should be pushed down during mounting. If those two tabs catch against each other, the tube will insert but won’t rotate far enough to lock, so the camera won’t detect it.

Since your lenses still mount and the tubes still fit another Nikon body, the issue is probably not the whole mount, but that specific tab interaction on the D5100. Carefully inspect the mount edge and the tube’s tab for anything misaligned or stuck, and make sure the spring-loaded tab on the camera moves freely. Do not force the tube into place, as that could damage the mount.
