Why won’t my Pentax K-S1 work with manual K-mount lenses after a reset?

After updating my Pentax K-S1 firmware and resetting settings to defaults, my older manual K lenses no longer work. Autofocus lenses still work normally, but with manual lenses the camera no longer prompts me to enter focal length at startup. The display just flashes “F--” and I can’t take photos in any mode. What setting do I need to change to use manual aperture-ring lenses again?

To use manual (K) lenses, Using Aperture Ring in menu C4 - 26 needs to be enabled (not enabled by default) - check user's manual, p. 85 - Setting the Focal Length.

A reset likely turned off the setting that allows lenses with an aperture ring.

On the Pentax K-S1, enable Using Aperture Ring in the custom settings menu (listed as C4-26 in the manual). When this is disabled, the camera won’t properly accept older manual K lenses, you may see F--, and the shutter may be blocked.

Once Using Aperture Ring is enabled again, the camera should let you mount and use those manual lenses, including prompting for focal length when appropriate for shake reduction.
