Why is the exposure meter on my Nikon D7000 stuck at 0 in Manual mode?

On my Nikon D7000, the exposure meter in Manual mode no longer changes and seems stuck around 0. I already tried the two-button reset and changing lenses, but it still won’t respond. Is there a setting that can cause this behavior?

I have a D7000 as well and experienced the same issue back when I first got it. In my case, having Auto ISO enabled was the culprit, and disabling that solved my problem immediately.

Otherwise, I'm confident a factory reset would also clear out the problem.

A likely cause is Auto ISO being enabled. On the Nikon D7000, if you’re in Manual mode with Auto ISO on, the camera can automatically change ISO to keep the exposure near the metered value, which can make the meter appear stuck around 0 instead of moving normally as you change settings.

Try turning Auto ISO off and check the meter again. If that doesn’t fix it, a full factory reset is a reasonable next step to clear any setting that may be affecting metering behavior.
