Why is the LCD display black in my Nikon FA viewfinder?

On my Nikon FA, the small LCD display in the upper-left of the viewfinder stays black and I can’t see any information. I’ve tried two sets of batteries, and the shutter still fires in automatic mode, so the batteries seem to be working. I also checked all four exposure modes with no change. What could cause the viewfinder LCD not to appear, and is there anything simple I should test first?

Hope your face or fingers doesn't cover the light sensor that activates the LCD, while looking through the VF. If so, the LCD won't trigger.
